This is one of the longest-running series of today and one of the few whose audience grows over time: Supernatural celebrates its first 300 episodes with Supernatural 2005 2020 15 Seasons 327 Episodes Carry On My Wayward Son Shirt on Warner Channel and its protagonists told THE NATION how they managed to catch the viewers with this story about two brothers who are involved in supernatural adventures. “Today we are a family and not everything is rosy but we know each other, we understand each other and we give space to each other,” they said.
“Who would have imagined 14 years ago that we would still be here, right? Imagine entering this studio and telling everyone that we are going to do a program about two brothers who hunt demons and never die because they know a friend who is an angel? Everyone would laugh and think it would be a failure! And yet, here we are and just as we are the first to be surprised, we are also the first to be grateful, especially to the fans,” Jared Padalecki told LA NACION.

In the plot, Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who are dedicated to fighting supernatural forces throughout the United States. Premiered in 2005 as a fantastic product in the path of what had been successes as Buffy, the Slayer, its continuation Angel or Charmed, Supernatural quickly found its audience, but with each new season tried to take the story a step further, encouraging itself to kill all its protagonists more than once, include in the story angels and demons and play with unexpected narrative twists.
Every year I ask myself, “What will they do now to overcome what we have already done? and they always end up surprising me. We have made episodes in which we travel to parallel realities in which our characters did not exist, we have died and resurrected several times, we have been cartoons …”, Ackles detailed. In fact, one of the most celebrated chapters was an unexpected collaboration with Scooby Doo: In an era in which series seem to need millionaire budgets and big Hollywood names to stand out in the infinite ocean of streaming possibilities, Supernatural continues to grow as a cult phenomenon under its own rules and without thunder. “The emergence of on-demand video platforms benefited us because there is no way to catch up with a series of 14 seasons on traditional TV,” confessed Padalecki.
Although all the action happens in the United States, the series is shot in the city of Vancouver, as well as other productions such as Supergirl, Flash, Star Trek: Discovery or Deadly Class. The Canadian government offers attractive incentives to work there and there are numerous television studios set up on the outskirts of the metropolis.
In the case of Supernatural, it’s the same site since 2005, in a structure that grew and became more complex with the passage of time and technological changes. The fiction began being recorded in 16 mm and today it is shot with maximum definition and its special effects equipment, which worked with prostheses and camera tricks more than a decade ago, now has 13 people working with digital software. Thus, a scene that years ago could demand a new set, objects such as torches or dozens of extras is now solved with animation and excellent results.
Having 14 seasons of a plot in which time travel and flashbacks are possible has some additional complications. The costume area, for example, keeps all the sets that the characters used from the first episode in a gigantic shed in which everything is labeled and inventoried. “You never know when a screenwriter will tell you: You know what? This character comes back from the dead!’ And you’re going to have to dress him up again. That’s why from the Winchesters sometimes we have up to five identical garments of each chapter, it’s better than having to go around the Internet and flea fairs looking for a certain checkered shirt,” explained Kerry Weinrauch, head of wardrobe.
Something similar happens with one of the great protagonists of the series and the favorite object of the fans, a black Chevrolet Impala from 1967 with which they traveled along the American routes. The vehicle became so iconic that the price of that model flew through the clouds and today there is a company that sells the car characterized as Supernatural and is treated in the set as an actor, with a person in charge and several “costume changes”, ready to shoot different types of scenes.
To visit the Supernatural set is to verify that the interaction of the technical team with the entire cast is of a unique familiarity and affection, typical of those who have a long journey together. “Today we are a family and, in fact, we see each other more than our families. Filming each episode means being away from our homes, affections and it is only possible to do so for so many years if our bond is healthy and strong. I am not going to tell you that everything is rosy or that we live a honeymoon of 14 years but we know each other, we understand each other and we give space to each other. When we started this adventure, producer Erick Kripke told us something that was key: ‘The series is only going to work if the relationship between you works,'” Jensen said.
For Mark Pellegrino, who in Supernatural puts himself in the shoes of none other than Lucifer, the television community that was formed also plays a central role: “There’s no doubt that fans keep this series alive that, frankly, is never going to end. Last year I met a 13-year-old girl who told me about the show but she wasn’t even born when it opened! She caught up with her dad and now it has become a family tradition. That generational shift is what allows for the unique phenomenon that we have more viewers today than when the series began.
Visiting the successful Supernatural series facility in Vancouver, Canada was an experience. It’s not just the excitement of knowing the studios where the longest running science fiction series in the United States and Canada is filmed; it’s also witnessing the brotherhood and passion that is breathed in every corner. There were many hours of waiting in a closed office or loitering in some recording sets, before having the opportunity to interview, along with a group of journalists from all over Latin America, their two protagonists: Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who play Sam and Dean Winchester, respectively. The visit to Canada was made as part of the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of Warner Channel, a channel that will broadcast from this Tuesday the eleventh season, in fact, in the United States, is broadcast the twelfth season second. For this reason, so far we have released the experience lived during this tour.
What can be anticipated from a television program with these characteristics is very little: nobody wants a spoiler! Jared and Jensen are very clear about what they can or cannot say about the new episodes. However, trying to undermine some revelation of the new season took a back seat when you start to understand the impact this show has both on your team (actors, producers, writers, etc…) and on the millions of fans who follow it week after week. Remember: with this season there are already 241 episodes.

The great clan. After 11 years of working with practically the same people, the space where this program is filmed becomes a gigantic home. On the day of the interviews, Supernatural’s house was running at full speed: people were running through the corridors so as not to delay filming; special effects managers were manipulating and editing the sequences; the actors’ agenda was completely compromised and a large dining room had been set up so that no one would forget to eat.
You will understand that receiving visitors in these conditions was not ideal, and even less so if you are a handful of journalists, eager to understand a little of what was happening around all this madness. Therefore, the ideal was to divide us into two groups, keep us together for several hours in two separate offices and wait. In that time we managed to go out to visit several of the sets where the series is filmed and talk to their designers.
We also met with those in charge of the special effects and even rummaged through the cellars where the props that have made this series famous are kept: heads, crucifixes, knives, supposedly holy water (actually it’s lubricating gel), spell books… in short, everything that a television program with demons, angels and supernatural beings would need to look real.
We even saw up close the 1965 Chevrolet Impala model, the car in which the Winchester brothers travel throughout the United States and which has become as popular as its own protagonists. It’s a jewel, and so it’s not surprising to see that they take more care of the car than the cast of the series itself.
Big brother. Finally, from the door you hear a hoarse voice saying: “Hello”. Before entering the office, he looks closely at all the journalists and, aware that we had waited all day to talk to him for only 15 minutes, he approaches the only empty place on the table and jokingly says, “This is literally the hot chair.
Although everyone present was exhausted from waiting, it was evident that Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) was also tired and had been arriving from a long day of recording. Still, he was always smiling.
“I know that (working on this program) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There aren’t many actors who manage to be part of a series that lasts more than a decade and that, besides, amen,” says Ackles, who started acting in Supernatural when he was 25 years old. Today, he is already married, has a daughter and has just turned 38.
Now that he knows he has a successful show and a loyal audience, he remembers how difficult it was to start in 2005 when, he says, the failure rate of a new TV program was 87%.
“The program managed to maintain a large audience that made us viable for the network, because we were definitely not the strongest show. That, in the end, benefited us: it took the pressure off us, we weren’t under the microscope and it allowed us to develop,” recalls Ackles.
Supernatural was even one of the first series he signed with Netflix while it was still being produced for television. That gave a new generation the opportunity to learn about the adventures of the Winchester brothers. “Now I have a grandmother, a mother and a daughter watching the show,” he says. About the new episodes there’s not much that can be revealed: “One of the features I like most about this season is that it’s a restart. In all seasons it was common to see these two brothers save each other. This time they will have to fight the darkness and go back to the origins of the series: they fight together for the same goal,” he says. Joking. After apologizing for the long wait, Jared Padalecki asks the group: “Was Jensen rude? From here it is clear that the bond that unites them in the series transcended reality.
“I’m so happy with Supernatural, which means to me – here I met my wife – and what has permeated my being. I’m 33 years old and I’ve worked here for 11 years: that’s a third of my life,” he says in astonishment.
To understand the importance of Supernatural in Jared’s life, you have to give back a few years when he revealed that he suffered from severe depression during the filming of the third season of the program. With the support of the whole team and thanks to the exposure he received from the series, he recognized Supernatural Carry On My Wayward Son 2005 2020 15 Seasons All Cast Signature Shirt that he had anxiety problems and promoted the campaign Always Keep Fighting, an initiative that seeks to make the world aware of the problems of depression, addiction and suicidal thoughts. “I’ve always had to deal with anxiety and depression problems, situations that Sam (the character he plays) has also had to deal with, and that hooked me since I read the script the first time,” he says.
