In the beginning of The Nightmare Before Christmas at the end of this is Halloween sequence when Jack rises from the well in his debut of being the sexiest skeleton in the known universe and the entire town is chanting, that is such an unbelievably powerful got damn scene that embodies the true spirit of Halloween and we as a species should be more humble that we all lived to witness it.

I know I’m going to get a TON of hate for this, but just know that I have no problem with Sally from nightmare before Christmas. I love her! She’s a fantastic secondary character! Her personality and everything was amazing. With that in mind, we can’t just ignore the fact that her and Jack’s romance was kind of forced. At the beginning we had a believable friendship! Jack enjoyed Sally’s company because she didn’t just compliment him all the time, she talked to him like a fellow creature. Their FRIENDSHIP wasn’t forced. But the movie tried really hard to make them fall in love.
Sally’s song was a major indicator about this. The plot of the song was “I’m worried for my friend, I’m afriend he’s getting himself in trouble” but in several parts in the song she jumps to “when will see see that I love him” like???!! Girl, your friend MIGHT DIE why are you worried about him noticing you at this moment?! If they wanted her to sing about her love for him, they could have done it during that scene where she gives Jack a care package.
Finally, at the end of the movie Sally’s on the hill and Jack just. .. comes up and proclaims his love??! We never got any scene where he realized she liked him. NONE! At the beginning, Jack was lamenting about his place as king, in the next scene we see him experience and explain Christmas, immediately after that he is trying to figure out Christmas and, as the song ‘something’s wrong with Jack’ says “he’s a alone up there with Jack Skellington I Just Baked You Some Shut The Fucupcakes Shirt, locked away inside, hasn’t said a word” which means he hasn’t LEFT that house at all after he showed Christmas to them. Sure you might say “well he probably let Sally in?” Yeah, I would think so too, but Sally is super shy and even when she made the care package for him, she just lifted it to him and left before he could say anything.
If they really wanted that ending to make sense they could have made oogie boogie the middle man. We’ve all seen it in some forms of media. The villian knows weaknesses of either everyone or some people and the love interest gets kidnapped by the villain, the hero comes to save the day and the villain tortured the love interest or hero by talking about how one of them has a crush on the other. Oogie boogie is the “shadow man” a nightmare. He obviously could know the deepest darkest fears or desires that everyone In Halloween has! He could have mocked Sally’s desire for Jack while he was torturing her and santa. That would have caused the ending to make sense! But they didn’t!!! And so Jack climbing the hill and proclaiming his love was just a forced way to bring the love interests together.

Now I hear you saying “well Jack probably wanted to proclaim his love after he escaped death!” And that makes sense, BUT we didn’t recieve any Indication that that was how it happened. Something as small as Jack picking up a picture of Sally after the crash could have worked but we received nothing. And for that, I rest my case. Jack and Sally’s relationship was forced. Why? I don’t know, it might be because it was under Disney’s name and at the time the movie was made princess movies and otherwise romantic films were rising in the box office. They saw that romance was popular and they must of told the script writers that they needed to write them to be together in order for them to market the movie in an acceptable rate. And this had to be it because the original poem of the movie didn’t even MENTION Sally or their romance.
Jack is the Pumpkin King. He keeps Halloweentown organized and running and could rule it from the depths of his tower, but he still bestows the name “friend” on that cute doll girl who sewed his suit and the fat cranky guy he just kidnapped met this morning. And none of this had anything to do with him! Yeah, he’d kidnapped Sandy Claws and was very fond of this Sally doll, but he didn’t have to go risking his life for them–he’s an immortal skeleton, the scientist guy can build him some new friends. But despite his myriad ribs, his heart could not be contained within himself, so he proudly risked his life to help people in danger. Jack Skellington is a true icon of heroism and I think you all ought to know that.
I’m so excited for this Halloween, the 25th anniversary of The Nightmare Before Christmas is coming and I’m gripping everyday but I’m also literally so not ready for it, mostly emotionally. This movie means a lot to me and has been a part of my life in many different forms for almost 12 years now and I’m afraid it’ll past me by and I would’ve wasted this special time of year. I don’t know exactly how I’ll spend it, I have little faith I could even come up with interesting art since I have lame and weird, stupidly specific ideas on tiny shit in the movie that I spend so much emotional investment in that I often lose on the larger themes in the movie in general Jack Skellington I Just Baked You Some Shut The Fucupcakes Shirt. Does anyone else feel like they will end up wasting all this time? I’m trying to think better, have more security and just think on the time there is left until the big anniversary, that there is enough time to think and plan.
